One design, replicated

Build one room before eighteen

Specification meetings produce designs that look complete and fail in small ways: a cable that is thirty centimetres too short, a button labelled in a way nobody understands, a camera angle that cuts off the end of the table. Two weeks of real use finds all of it. Changing one room is inexpensive; discovering the same problem in every room after the rollout is not.

Identical beats optimal

Given the choice between eighteen rooms each optimised for its shape and eighteen rooms that behave identically, the identical estate wins in practice. People move between buildings, meetings start on time, support handles one configuration instead of eighteen, and training happens once. The optimised version is better on paper and worse in a Tuesday morning.
